Farewell to a much loved member – 26/10/2009

Members of Harlow Hockey Club have been paying their tributes after Nicky Newland, ladies 1st team goalkeeper and much loved member, was tragically killed in a traffic accident on Saturday, 17th October. Nicky was making her way to the clubhouse after a home game against Wapping when a Nissan Skyline traveling in the opposite direction collided with her Vauxhall Corsa. Our club spokeswoman told reporters:

“She was a massive personality within the club.”

“Not only did Nicky have a huge bond with the ladies’ teams past and present, she was also an integral part of the whole club and we are devastated.”

“Nicky was more than just the ladies’ goalkeeper, she was also a great personal friend to so many of us and loved by us all.”

“Words cannot describe fully what a truly amazing person she was, who has touched our lives in so many ways.”

Our sincere condolences are with Nicky's family that she leaves behind: her husband Lee, her parents, her sister and a nephew.

Nicky married Lee in Las Vegas in November 2007 after a whirlwind romance.

Lee said in a statement issued by the family that he did not have enough time with Nicky, whom he “loved with all his heart”.

Robert Gallagher, a passenger in the Nissan, was pronounced dead at the scene. Our thoughts are also with Mr Gallagher's family.

Harlow Hockey Club would also like to thank all members of the emergency services involved that day for their tremendous efforts, with a special thanks to the crew of the Essex Air Ambulance, who airlifted Nicky to The Royal London Hospital. The Essex Air Ambulance requires charitable donations to operate. You can make a donation by visiting their website here.

Nicky was described be her team-mates as “totally irreplaceable”.

The new season – 28/09/2008

Welcome to the 2008-09 season, and a new era for us. After a long summer we're pleased to get back to playing hockey! This September we are delighted to welcome a huge intake of new junior players and seniors alike. New Men's players include Lee Gorringe and Shane Grace who have already made their mark. We say hello again to Sunny Jun, and Karen Capon, both capable of making their mark on the Ladies 1's. Training sessions have changed - geared more towards fitness whilst skills and drills still important. The big news... after 20 plus years at Marigolds we have been forced to forge a new partnership; Harlow Town Cricket Club are focused on the playing and having fun side of sport. We have been made very welcome at their facilities and hope to develop a long standing relationship to improve upon our social status more than ever before! Thank you to all of those involved in making this a smooth transition.
League Hockey has begun, and a round of club nights upon us, please come down and taste a friendly atmosphere for yourselves, starting this Saturday for our Club Warming Night...It's free and open to all.

Good luck if you are playing either Junior friendlies in November or League hockey throughout the year - no matter what the result I hope you have fun, keep fit, and enjoy what I think is the most competitive mixed sport bar none.
